Desox

DESOX - DERUSTER

Product information and application

DESOX is a concentrated acid product suitable to de-rust, degrease and pickle metals in one treatment. DESOX also removes mill scale.
DESOX is based upon phosphoric acid, which has many advantages against other acids like sulphuric and hydrochloric acid.

  1. The formed phosphate layer gives, after treatment, depending on the humidity in the area where the materials are stored, a corrosion-protection for a short time.
  2. DESOX forms no corrosive vapours, not even at high temperatures.
  3. DESOX does not attack the original material in contrary to sulphuric and hydrochloric acid.

Besides phosphoric acid DESOX contains selected pickling additives and emulsifiers, which prevent the attacking of the original material and take care of good degreasing properties.

The formed phosphate layer is resistant against fluctuation of temperatures, influences of condensation and is an ideal base for paint and lacquer systems.
DESOX is economical in use, it gives a saving on costs of 60% with regard to steel grit blasting. DESOX can be used manual and in immersion baths.

Directions

IMMERSION BATH METHOD

To derust, degrease and phosphate steel, DESOX has to be used in an immersion bath.
The immersion bath should be made of stainless steel type 316 or steel plate covered with rubber or polytene.
The dilution rate of DESOX with water is 1:10 to 1:20*.
The temperature of the bath should be between 20°C and 45°C, the higher the temperature the faster DESOX will work and dry afterwards.
In case of liquid losses caused by evaporation, the bath must be filled up with the right DESOX-solution. We advise not to wait until the bath is half empty, in connection with the quickened saturation.
Treated metals do not have to be rinsed afterwards.
Drying in non humid area or with warm air is sufficient.

Recommendations

  • *Higher or lower concentrations can cause a quicker saturation of the bath.
  • Do not put two non-equivalent metals in the same bath at the same time.
  • Do not put metal parts on each other.
  • DESOX cannot be used on tin, brass, zinc, nickel, or metal which contains carbon and galvanised surfaces.
  • Do not leave clean metals in the bath longer than necessary.

Consumption

  • With 1 litre DESOX in solution +/- 2,5 m2 metal surface can be de-rusted, depending on the oxidation.
  • Maximum iron content per litre DESOX in solution is 25gr.

How to control a DESOX-bath

a. pH-test.

The pH of a non used DESOX solution is 1.When the pH is raised during use up to 2,5 - 3 a new DESOX solution has to be added to the bath until the pH drops to 1 - 1,5 (DESOX-solution 1:5 to 1:7).
Tests shows that it is possible to add a new DESOX-solution 1-2 times to the bath, before the saturation point of DESOX is there (25gr FE/litre).

b. Determination of iron content by means of titration.

  1. Put, with the help of a pipette, 10ml bath liquid in a conical flask.
  2. Add 10ml sulphuric acid to it.
  3. Dilute it with 100 ml. distillated water.
  4. Titrate it with 0.1% potassium permanganate, till the pink colour stays for 30 seconds.

Calculation

Regarding 10 ml of bath liquid, 1 ml. 0.1 N potassium permanganate corresponds to an iron content of 0,56 gr Fe25/litre.
With an iron content of 25 gr/litre the bath is saturated and needs to be changed.
